Some UK optoelectronic education opportunities:

  • EngD in Photonics at Heriot-Watt University
    The Eng.D is a 4-year postgraduate degree, with an emphasis on research in a business context, delivering the senior research managers of the future. It achieves this through a combination of taught coursework (25%) and industrial project work (75%). The Photonics Eng.D coursework consists of specialist photonic and optoelectronic topics, together with business courses taken from the internationally renowned Edinburgh Business School MBA. The selection of modules is tailored to the requirements of individual students and projects.  For further details please see:

  • MSc in Photonics And Optoelectronic Devices
    Heriot Watt and St Andrews Universities jointly run a twelve-month taught MSc that includes a three-month research project, usually in industry. The course material features lasers, nonlinear optics, semiconductor optoelectronics, modern optics, optical waveguides and optical communications, awareness of the photonics and optoelectronics industries, and a mix of theoretical and practical work. There are about thirteen EPSRC-funded Studentships available which cover fees and provide a maintenance grant of £10,000.  For further details please see:

  • Display Masters - training and education
    Masters Training Programme in Displays Technology, Systems and Applications: The complete Education and Training package for graduates and professionals looking to further their career in the Displays Sector.  A number of options are available: a Masters degree and short courses for professionals.  DisplayMasters is sponsored by the EPSRC and run by Dundee University in collaboration with the Universities of Abertay Dundee, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Napier, Oxford and Nottingham Trent.  For further details plese see:

  • PgDip/MSc Sensor Design at UWS
    The MSc in Sensor Design has been developed in conjunction with Honeywell, a diversified technology and manufacturing leader. It is intended for recently-qualified graduates or existing engineers/technologists wishing to either commence their career or further their career by undertaking a Masters-level qualification designed for Sensor Design Engineers/Technologists. The programme provides a solid foundation in the practical techniques required in experimental laboratory work, the analysis of data and computer simulation techniques, including use of industry-standard packages such as Pro-Engineer and Pro-Mechanica.  For further details plese see:

  • Scottish Universities Summer School in Physics
    The 66th Scottish Universities Summer School in Physics (SUSSP66) will be held at Heriot Watt University between the 11th and 21st of August 2010. The topic of the summer school will be Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics and will include lectures from many of the worlds leading scientists in this area.  For further details please see the Summer School Poster.

  • The Welsh Optoelectronics Forum Photonics Academy

    The WOF Photonics Academy is a novel framework for meeting the skills needs of present and potential employees and employers of the photonics industry in Wales.
